The “big question” one sees clichéd in movies and stands as a staple in spiritual and philosophical circles alike. What is the meaning of life? What is our purpose? As we navigate, what some may feel is a God forsaken world. We see many wonders as well as many sorrows. Leaving some in awe that there has to be more to it than this, there has to be more to life… Right?
I would be a liar if I told you that during my pilgrimage in this world I never mused upon these things. Finding that one friend that you could hopefully have an engaging “spiritual”conversation with regarding these topics. Feeling as if destiny awaits, or trying to find your “higher calling” in this world. First, one should note why one should even consider questioning the meaning of life?
2Esdras 8:49-51
49 In that thou hast humbled thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not judged thyself worthy to be much glorified among the righteous. 50 For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world, because they have walked in great pride. 51 But understand thou for thyself, and seek out the glory for such as be like thee.
It isn’t about trying to be more philosophical. No, no, or even just to have a greater purpose or calling in life. Have you considered that there could be dire consequences for not moving according to something you should be doing, yet, have not known of it? I believe this perspective to be the most underrated when one muses upon the meaning of life… THE CONSEQUENCES.
2 Esdras 8:56
56 For when they had taken liberty, they despised the most High, thought scorn of his law, and forsook his ways.
Liberty is freedom. When we as people had the freedom of choice, many chose not to get to know God and what he wanted. But rather thought negative toward his word and rejected the application of it in their lives and therefore rejected him in their life. Because you chose not to follow his way of life that he set for you to follow.
2 Esdras 8:59–60
59 For as the things aforesaid shalt receive you, so thirst and pain are prepared for them: for it was not his will that men should come to nought: 60But they which be created have defiled the name of him that made them, and were unthankful unto him which prepared life for them.
For those that apply the Most High’s laws statutes and commandments blessings are in store for you. Howbeit, for those that did not understand the meaning of life and move accordingly. Pain and anguish are prepared for you. However, it was not Gods will that you should suffer but rather that you and all flesh should change their ways. As God created a plan for the whole earth to have peace, we as mankind decided to alter that plan according to our will. We will not all have the same blessing, but all life will be blessed under the Most High’s rulership; the trees, the animals, the other nations etc. However, the nation of Israel will receive the best blessing… Well, those that choose to be right.
2 Esdras 9:5–12 KJVA
5 For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end, and the end is manifest: 6 Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonder and powerful works, and endings in effects and signs. 7 And every one that shall be saved, and shall be able to escape by his works, and by faith, whereby ye have believed, 8 Shall be preserved from the said perils, and shall see my salvation in my land, and within my borders: for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning. 9 Then shall they be in pitiful case, which now have abused my ways: and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments. 10 For such as in their life have received benefits, and have not known me; 11 And they that have loathed my law, while they had yet liberty, and, when as yet place of repentance was open unto them, understood not, but despised it; 12 The same must know it after death by pain.
Verse twelve is one of the coldest verses, especially how verse eleven ties into it. You had the freedom and the chance to repent. You chose not to change and not to understand but rather to despise the Most High and his laws and now you have to pay for your choice forever after you have died in this world and realize the error of your way through pain and suffering. This alone, if nothing else should humble you to want to learn about the father to ensure you are holistically following him in all areas. And to know he wants you in his kingdom! Anything less isn’t even an option.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJVS
[13] Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
