Calendar Part 3: Days in a Month

Updated: Oct 11

How many days are generally in a month? We are accustomed to seeing significant variations of days in a month throughout the year; from as little as 28 days to as much as 31. But what does the Bible denote as the general number of days in a month?

Genesis 7:11 KJVS

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Here we see the story of Noah. But a key detail we often overlooked (a it beared no significance to us at the time) is the specific day and month the events took place. We are told that in the 2nd month, the 17th day of the month the flood commenced.

Genesis 7:24 KJVS

And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

We are then shown that the waters from the flood remained on the earth for 150 days. Enough time for no land dwelling creature; human or otherwise to survive.

Genesis 8:3-4 KJVS

And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. [4] And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

The key is in this verse. When we find that the waters were not only cleared after 150 days but that the ark settled on dry land during that time, which happened to be the 7th month and the 17th day of the month.

Now lets us do some math. I know Im not a big fan of math myself but this math is worth it! Short and painless! Mostly…

Let us look at the numbers from above to put this in an equation we can understand.

  • 2nd month 17th day of the month flood started

  • 7th month 17th day of the month the flood ended

  • 150 days was the flood on the earth

  • From the 2nd month to the 7th month are 5 months

  • 5M/150D=30D or 5 months divided by 150 days would give us 30 days in a month.

We use detective reasoning to conclude that if we see a consistent 30 day pattern for 5 months we believe that this pattern would continue for the remaining of the year. Adding that to what we understand about God and how he likes consistency, patterns, numbers that make sense and are common. In addition to him not being the author of confusion. We can safely say that it appears that we have 360 days in a year. Given a 12 month cycle. But more on that later.

“It lasts an average of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, 3 seconds, but its length is very flexible. It can be as short as 29 days, 6 hours, or as long as 29 days, 20 hours.
