Calendar Part 1: When A Day Begins and Ends

Updated: Nov 2

Sirach 33:7 KJVA

Why doth one day excel another, when as all the light of every day in the year is of the sun?

One of the first things we have to understand when learning about the calendar and how to keep the feasts of The Most High God, is learning when a day even begins and ends. We are taught midnight. But think on that for one moment.... Midnight… “Mid” usually signifies what? Middle! And night, would mean what? Evening, darkness etc. So in the middle of the evening; in the middle of the night, you start a new day? Strange indeed! And definitely against nature. For where exactly in the middle would you start? And how would you know? Yet, most of us grew up learning to start our day in the middle of the day, causing days to overlap or “excel another" as the scriptures state.

 Daniel 7:25 KJVS

And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

One of the key points that we learn in this passage in Daniel, is that someone (that someone being Esau) would come along and do a number of things but for the sake of this article, we are going to elucidate one key fact. They thought “to change times and laws”. Thought, because Esau could not effectively change the laws of God, nor the sun, moon, or stars that govern measurable time for all of creation. But he can teach us differently, hide information and lie. But we have the power to reveal, teach and share the truth.

Genesis 1:14-16 KJVS

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: [15] And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. [16] And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

The Most High made the sun to be the light that governs what he set as the time period of “day”. The moon to be the light that governs the night. The role they play was defined as not only light but also to be signs or indicators, that govern and signify seasons, months, days, and years.

Sirach 43:1-5 KJVA

1 The pride of the height, the clear firmament, the beauty of heaven, with his glorious shew; 2 The sun when it appeareth, declaring at his rising a marvellous instrument, the work of the most High: 3 At noon it parcheth the country, and who can abide the burning heat thereof? 4 A man blowing a furnace is in works of heat, but the sun burneth the mountains three times more; breathing out fiery vapours, and sending forth bright beams, it dimmeth the eyes. 5 Great is the Lord that made it; and at his commandment runneth hastily.

The sun does not stay in our view 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It has a time period where it rises from being absent. At noon, is when it is at its peak; its brightest and hottest. Which we will see in the middle of the day; noon. Showing forth rays that can be so bright, it causes one to have to squint. One must marvel at not only The Most High that made it, but also the accuracy of the scriptures in how our forefathers described it.

Numbers 2:3 KJVS

And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.

We all know the saying, the sun rises on the east and sets on the west. These are the standards and rules the sun follows.

Isaiah 45:6 KJVS

That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Again, if the sun arises in the east, we know it sets in the west. The same order set up from the beginning of creation.

Genesis 1:5 KJVS

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Day and night are also the two parts he divided the roughly 24 hours of a day into. However, the evening represents the beginning of the day or the first part of a whole day. Evening and then morning, as there was darkness first and then God created light.

Leviticus 23:32 KJVS

It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

Our sabbaths are generally observed from evening unto evening. Night time until nighttime. When the sun sets and it gets dark we have ended one day and begin the next.

Proverbs 7:9 KJVS

In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

Again, that evening, being not when we no longer see the sun itself but rather not only when we no longer see the sun but inclusive of its rays of light... It is dark outside. The west looks like the east.

Romans started their day at midnight, in an effort at a rational systemization. In this scheme the start of the day was equidistant from sunset and sunrise. The Roman solution has become the worldwide norm today.”

"The Calendar: History, Lore, and Legend" Jaqueline de Bourgoing pg 26

The Romans (who is identified as Edom) observed midnight as the start of THEIR day.

equidistant

adjective

  1. equally distant.

The Jewish day began in the evening with the appearance of the first stars. - Zondervan Compact Bible Dictionary - Calendar

However, our people observed the evening as the start of OUR day. And I pray you choose to do the same.
