If there is one thing we know of for certain in this life, it is that, just as we most certainly live, we will all most certainly die. But from the beginning it was not so. This was not the will of God, but rather the decision of man. Well, the decision of one man and one woman.

Genesis 2:17 KJVS

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

See, Adam was like many of us, we forget fat meat can grease a skillet. Both for us and for Adam and Eve, there was a lack of understanding on what die meant. Even unto this day, Satan’s delusion still haunts many of us. So many do not believe they will die if they sin. You see, in the case of Adam and Eve they had to learn that death can be executed in more than one way. We read the story and can even feel as if they did not die due to their sin. When this is not the case.

2 Esdras 3:7 KJVA

And unto him thou gavest commandment to love thy way: which he transgressed, and immediately thou appointedst death in him and in his generations, of whom came nations, tribes, people, and kindreds, out of number.

God immediately appointed death unto Adam and Eve. They did not have an expiration date prior to them sinning. They had a beginning but not an end. And not only them but all of those who come after them.

2 Esdras 3:10 KJVA

And it came to pass in every of them, that as death was to Adam, so was the flood to these.

Just as the flood came and killed all those who were not on the ark, so death came for Adam and Eve.

Wisdom 2:23 KJVA

For God created man to be immortal, and made him to be an image of his own eternity.

God’s plan was for man, the pinnacle of his creation, made to be as he was; that is, to be eternal. To be able to live forever. But what can be given can be taken away, and plans can change.

Genesis 5:5 KJVS

And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

Adam lived for many years, hundreds of years. Something many of us would love to have. Yet, it is due to our life being so short in comparison that we yearn for this significant upgrade. Like someone offering you one million dollars instead of ten thousand dollars. But if you knew the original deal was billion’s that you were supposed to receive yet, you blew it. That one million becomes more of a participation reward. So, nine hundred years sounds great but we were supposed to live for all of eternity. Like we should not only have hundreds of years on the clock but millions, billions. At that point, a few hundred is just a drop in a bucket. Again, compare nine hundred dollars to just one billion… It doesn’t even compare. No matter how long that number was. God’s judgment still stood, he would one day die. And now through his sin, we all have a time ticking on us, subject to death at any moment God decides to pull our ticket number.

2 Peter 3:8 KJVS

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

When you compare a day to God’s definition, one thousand years seems crazy. No man living or dead has ever reached that number.

Sirach 18:10 KJVA

As a drop of water unto the sea, and a gravelstone in comparison of the sand; so are a thousand years to the days of eternity.

When you look at the ocean it seems so vast and immersive it would be difficult to be able to count how many drops of water fill it up. Most would say that to would be impossible to figure out. Only God knows! But that is the same calculation of a thousand years compared to eternity. Again, you have been to the beach at least once in your life right? Have you ever just looked at all of the sand on the beach? And let’s not forget all the sand in the ocean! Now, think of one grain of sand, one little pebble, or speck in comparison. The speck, the pebble being a thousand years that you drop on the beach with the rest of all the sand you see and don’t see on all beaches and in the ocean, that is the comparison to eternity. It is immeasurable. This is what we lost and this is what we must repent and fight to get back to.
